Sooner or later it happens to every homeowner: something happens to your furnace or heat pump, and you have to decide whether to call in the troops or try to deal with the situation yourself. There are a few things you can check yourself without picking up the phone, but others require help from the pros.
Be Proactive
As you might suspect, calling us before you need us is always the best option. Scheduling regular maintenance before the winter season approaches allows us the opportunity to check out the system thoroughly, clean and adjust the important elements such as filters, belts, blowers, ignitors, and heat exchangers, and do some basic safety evaluations, such as examining the pilot light. A comprehensive tune-up can increase your home’s efficiency as well as catch issues before they become big problems.
Be Your Own Hero
If you’re experiencing sudden problems with your heating, there are a few things you can check on your own:
- Take a look at your thermostat—the fix may be as simple as a battery switch. Batteries typically last 3-4 years, and yours may be past its life.
- Take a trip to the circuit breaker box to make sure nothing has been tripped that would cut off the power supply.
- Take a walk around and evaluate your vents. Are they free from obstructions?
- If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times: check your filters! Dirty or clogged filters can adversely affect your furnace’s ability to do its job.
Pick up the Phone
It’s definitely time to call when the heating in your home is inconsistent or non-existent. Other red flags include abnormal banging, thumping, or popping coming from your furnace. Call us immediately if the pilot light is flickering or burning yellow instead of solid blue.
We’re Always Happy to Help
Whether you know you need us or just think you do, we are always ready to offer our expertise. Never hesitate to give us a call—that’s what we’re here for!
