- Rattle: If you’re hearing a rattling sound while the furnace is running, this could mean an unsecured duct, screw, or flapping piece of sheet metal. If you see a screw that may be the culprit, go ahead and tighten it down to see if the problem corrects itself. If, however, you hear rattling before the blower kicks on, this could mean a cracked heat exchanger, which might be allowing dangerous carbon monoxide to escape.
