But those winters don’t have to be hard on you—so long as you’re prepared. Below are a few tips to help make sure your HVAC system keeps you nice and toasty all season long, as well as some tips for being prepared in the event of a winter power outage.

Prepare Your HVAC System

When the weather is at its worst, your HVAC system needs to be at its best. So, here are a few ways to make sure your equipment is up to the task of keeping you warm through the coldest part of the year:

Take Care of Your Outdoor Components – Every HVAC system is a little bit different, but you’ll usually have outdoor components that need to be maintained. Most of that maintenance is technical and should be handled by the pros. But part of it you can do yourself. Your system’s outdoor components need room to “breathe” in order to function properly, so make sure they’re clear of branches, leaves, snow, and ice. While you’re at it, check the gutters to make sure they’re clear and won’t drip water onto your unit.

Get a Tune-Up – Your HVAC system, like anything else, is subject to wear and tear. And you definitely don’t want to run the risk of it conking out in the middle of a blizzard or on the coldest night of the year. The best way to prevent that is to stay on top of regular maintenance. When Appel comes out for a furnace clean and check, we make sure everything is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible to keep your system going strong all winter long.

Reprogram Your Thermostat – When the seasons change, so do your home comfort needs. But have you communicated those needs to your HVAC system yet? In order to maximize your furnace’s efficiency (and avoid paying out the nose on your energy bills), set the temp lower than you would in summer. 68º is usually a pretty comfy temperature for most homes in the winter. When no one is at home, you can set that temp lower by another 8-10 degrees (when setting thermostats lower or higher while away from home, please allow for recovery time). And make sure your fan is set to AUTO to avoid blowing cold air around the house when the furnace isn’t on.

Check Your Air Filter – Because HVAC systems tend to be in heavier use during the winter months, it’s possible your air filter might get dirty faster than at other times of the year. Give it a check every month or so to see if it needs to be replaced. Doing so can help keep your furnace running smoothly and efficiently, and it ensures your family isn’t breathing in any contaminated air.

Prepare for Power Outages

One of the main concerns during extreme winter weather is power outages. Heavy snow and/or ice buildup on power lines can do some serious damage, and it can take awhile for power companies to get everything back to working order. Making sure your home and family is prepared can help make the best out of a worst-case scenario.

Get a Generator – They’re not exactly cheap, but if it’s in the budget, you can use a generator to power your home when your regular electric and HVAC systems aren’t an option. A generator will keep your lights on, your refrigerator running, and your microwave working. It can also help you power a backup source of heating. Most residential generators run off of gas or propane, so make sure you have enough fuel to keep your generator going for a few days.

Use an Alternate Source of Heat – Your HVAC system needs electricity to power its various components (even if you have a gas furnace), so it will be of no use to you in a power outage. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to have a backup source of heat, like a fireplace or a space heater you can use with a generator. Radiant heaters, indoor propane heaters, or solar-powered heaters are also options. But NEVER use your gas stove as a way to heat your home—that’s an easy way to get carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be extremely deadly.

Prepare to Cook “Off Grid” – If you have the space, stock up with bottled water and lots of shelf-stable food before the season even starts. You might also want to get a cooler that you can transfer your food to while your fridge is out of service—if you have enough freezer storage, keep a couple bags of ice in there to use in the cooler if need be. If you have an outdoor grill (and it’s safe to be outside), you can cook with that until the power comes back on. If you have a generator, you can use it to power an electric hotplate or slow cooker. You can also get propane or gas-powered portable stoves that are meant for use indoors. Again, just make sure you stock up on fuel BEFORE the bad weather hits!

Get Camping Supplies – A few basic camping supplies can make your life a lot more functional and comfy when the power goes out. Keeping flashlights in every room of the house can be useful for when the power goes out suddenly after dark. Having an LED lantern or two to provide a bit more light can also be useful—just make sure you’ve also stocked up on plenty of batteries! Having some temperature-rated sleeping bags and/or blankets can make the nights a lot more comfortable until the heat comes back on. In extreme cases, setting up a small tent in a bedroom or living room can help keep you warmer, as it traps your body heat in the smaller space.

Learn the Safety Protocol – Unfortunately, carbon monoxide can be lethal. So, it’s important to understand the “do’s” and “don’ts” of indoor heating. You never, ever use a grill indoors. You never use your stove to heat up your home. And you never use a generator indoors. Know your appliances. Know the rules. And never, break them.

We hope these tips help you stay safe and warm this winter. And if you have questions about winterizing your HVAC system or need to schedule a furnace clean and check, give us a call! We’re here for you, through the mildest and wildest weather Indiana has to throw at us.

The post How to Prep for Extreme Winter Weather appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4930</post-id>

Why Off-Season is On Point with HVAC Clean & Checks

SGC Admin

Maintenance

clean and check maintenance

HVAC maintenance

off-season HVAC

During the fall and spring, when the weather is lovely and mild, you’re probably not thinking about your HVAC system.... Read the Rest »

The post Why Off-Season is On Point with HVAC Clean & Checks appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

During the fall and spring, when the weather is lovely and mild, you’re probably not thinking about your HVAC system. But maybe you should be, because the off-season is actually a perfect time to perform clean and check maintenance. Read on for more info on clean and checks, why they’re so important, and why scheduling them in the off-season is the way to go.

What is an HVAC Clean and Check?

What we call a “clean and check” is essentially the recommended routine maintenance for your HVAC system. One of our technicians will come out and make sure all the parts and pieces of your furnace or air conditioner are running smoothly, all the belts and fans are adjusted properly, and all the fluids are topped up. If any issues pop up, the tech will be able to spot them before they become big (expensive) problems and make any necessary recommendations. (Never had a clean and check before? This article tells you all about what to expect from your appointment.)

Why are Clean and Checks Important?

HVAC clean and checks are part of a normal, healthy, maintenance routine. So, you’re not really getting them because something is wrong. You’re getting them to protect your investment. Here are just a few of the reasons this upkeep is so important:

Safety: Your HVAC system is hooked up to several different utilities. All of those interactions need to run smoothly, or you could find yourself with a potentially dangerous situation, like an electrical fire, on your hands. A poorly maintained system can also spew harmful pathogens, toxins, and mold into the air you breathe. Not good!

Comfort: Your HVAC system can only do its job if it’s working as intended. If something is off, you’ll be able to feel it in the temperature of your home. So, we come by, do a cooling or heating test, and make sure everything’s up to snuff.

Money: If your HVAC units aren’t maintained properly, it can overwork your system, which is bad in three different ways. 1) It shortens the lifespan of your HVAC system. 2) It can lead to costly breakdowns. 3) It uses much more energy than it needs to, which raises your energy bill. All in all, spending a little on a clean and check maintenance saves a lot down the line.

Why Get a Clean and Check in the Off-Season?

Different HVAC companies may have slightly different definitions of “off-season,” so be sure to ask for details. At Appel, we consider furnace off-season to be January through April, and air conditioner off-season to be July 15th through September. Here are a few reasons getting your HVAC system maintained in these off-seasons is a great idea:

More Availability

We’re fortunate to have a large, talented team, so we try to accommodate every appointment as quickly as possible, no matter the time of year. But we get a lot of calls in the hottest and coldest months of the year, which can slow us down a bit. Getting maintenance done in the off-season means a much higher chance that we’ll be able to come see you at YOUR convenience (and a much lower chance that you’ll need to call us in the extreme weather in the first place).

Better Rates

The peak season finds HVAC employees working overtime, which drives up the cost of labor. It also means the parts and equipment are in demand, which drives up the cost of materials. This means the rates tend to be a little higher in the peak season, throughout the HVAC industry. Since costs are lower in the off-season, many HVAC companies typically pass those savings on to their customers (Appel, included).

Peak-Season Preparedness

There are few experiences worse than realizing your HVAC system has failed in the middle of a bout of extreme temperature. Not to mention that living without AC during a heatwave or without a furnace during a cold snap can be dangerous…and very expensive to fix. Having your units cleaned and checked in the off-season stops these emergencies from happening and gets your HVAC system ready for those moments when you need it the most.

More Convenient

The summer and winter are typically packed with holidays, family time, and travel. For many people, the peak season for the HVAC industry is also the peak season for fun plans…that have nothing to do with their HVAC systems. Scheduling your clean and checks for the off-season means one less thing to have to juggle when you’re busy living life to the fullest.

Reach out to Appel to learn more about off-season clean and checks, or sign up for one of our off-season Platinum Maintenance Plans to save money and make sure your HVAC is ready for primetime.

The post Why Off-Season is On Point with HVAC Clean & Checks appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4875</post-id>

What to Expect from a Routine HVAC Maintenance Appointment

SGC Admin

Maintenance

HVAC maintenance

HVAC tips

Platinum Maintenance Plan

routine maintenance

Much like owning a car, owning an HVAC system means you should schedule routine maintenance to keep it running in... Read the Rest »

The post What to Expect from a Routine HVAC Maintenance Appointment appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

Much like owning a car, owning an HVAC system means you should schedule routine maintenance to keep it running in tip-top shape. But if you’ve never experienced an HVAC maintenance appointment before, then it’s not exactly “routine” for you, yet. Perhaps you’re a new homeowner, or maybe you’ve been taking your chances up to now, only calling in the pros when something goes wrong (we don’t recommend that…it tends to get pretty expensive). So, this article tells you exactly what to expect from a routine HVAC maintenance appointment.

The Benefits of Routine Maintenance

It’s helpful to think about maintenance like an investment, because you’re spending a little money today to save a lot of money down the line. Routine maintenance can help you prevent costly breakdowns, prolong the life of your system, and increase efficiency, which saves you money on your energy bill.

The Process

Scheduling

You typically want to schedule routine maintenance appointments about twice per year. You can certainly keep track of this on your own—put reminders on your calendar and make an appointment accordingly. But many HVAC companies will keep track of this for you, especially if you sign up for a maintenance plan. At Appel, we’ll keep track of your maintenance schedule and reach out to you when it’s time. That way, you’ll never miss an appointment, and you’ll keep your HVAC system at its best.

Preparation

The preparation is very light, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

When scheduling, if this is your first appointment, you might want to tell the technician what kind of HVAC system you have (if you don’t have that info, that’s okay—it will just help them ensure they’re as prepared for the appointment as possible).

Keep a record of any concerns you have or issues you’ve experienced and have it handy for the appointment. Your technician will do a thorough inspection, but any extra info you have will help them pinpoint any problem areas.

Make sure your pets are secured on the day of the appointment, so they don’t escape or think they’re dealing with an intruder.

The Appointment Itself

The appointment usually lasts about 1-2 hours. The specifics of an appointment will vary a bit, depending on the HVAC company, your equipment, and any concerns or issues you might have. In general, at Appel, we’ll send a certified tech who will do the following:

Create a Dialogue – At Appel, every appointment starts and ends with a conversation. You’ll have the opportunity to share concerns and ask questions. And your technician will summarize their findings and recommendations in a clear, easy-to-understand way.

Perform a Test – These appointments usually start with a simple inspection, where we’ll take a look at all of your various HVAC elements and make sure everything is working as it should.

Do a Safety Check – Your HVAC system is extremely safe, as long as it’s working properly. That being said, your HVAC system interacts with several utilities, like your gas line and electrical grid. And if either of those interactions goes sideways, you could end up in a dangerous situation. So, your technician makes sure all of that is good to go.

General Upkeep – Your HVAC system, like anything else, is subject to wear-and-tear. So, your technician will need to do a little bit of finessing to optimize your system. That includes cleaning components, tightening screws, and straightening belts. It also includes lubricating parts, making adjustments, and clearing obstructions.

The Appel Standard

We just walked you through a standard maintenance appointment. But at Appel, our goal isn’t to meet the standard. Our goal is to exceed it. That’s why we’re committed to going above and beyond, at every step of the way. You can read more about the way we do business here. But in short, you’ll always get a licensed technician, fair, honest pricing, and the same exceptional service we’ve been delivering since 1948.

The Platinum Maintenance Plan

If you like the idea of keeping up with your HVAC maintenance, but you don’t have time to stay on top of it, we get it. That’s why we offer our highly popular Platinum Maintenance Plan. You touch a button and, just like that, you literally control the weather (inside your home, anyway). If it’s doing its job well, there’s usually no reason you need to think about how or why a thermostat does what it does. But there are a few things you may want to know in order to keep your equipment running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. (And we, at least, find the hows and whys quite interesting!)

How Thermostats Work

Your thermostat is what helps you regulate the temperature inside of your home. Depending on what kind of thermostat you have, the actual mechanics will vary a bit. But the overall gist is simple: you push the button (on the wall unit or even on your phone if you have a WiFi thermostat) to tell it what temperature you want your home to be. Using either sensors (for digital/electronic versions) or a system of metal strips or coils and a vial of mercury (typically only in older homes) your thermostat knows what temperature your home is already at and will turn on your HVAC unit accordingly. It continues to monitor the temperature and will shut the unit off once the air reaches the desired setting. When it dips below or above the desired temp, it’ll turn the unit back on, and the process repeats.

Thermostats and Energy Usage

Your HVAC system is either powered by natural gas, or it’s powered by electricity—one way or another, it uses a decent amount of energy. A thermostat helps you conserve some of that energy by turning your HVAC system off and on, so it’s not going full blast all day and night long. Thermostats are an important tool for conservation, because they help make sure we’re using only what we need. They’re good for the planet, and they’re great for the wallet!

Why Thermostat Placement Matters

Have you ever stood near a window to soak in the sun? Or stood near a door and felt a bit of a draft? Both of those moments illustrate a very important concept—the air indoors can be different temperatures, even within the same room. That’s why the placement of your thermostat is so important. For instance, you don’t want to place it in direct sunlight—your thermostat will think it’s much warmer than it really is, and you’ll end up with a very chilly house. Similarly, you don’t want to place it too high, because hot air rises. Ideally, your thermostat will be:

About 52-60 inches off the ground.

On an inside wall that doesn’t contain pipe or ductwork.

Away from doors and windows and out of the sunlight.

In a centrally located area of your home that you use regularly (like your living room).

How to Test Your Thermostat

If your thermostat is faulty, not only could it affect your comfort, it could also be wasting lots of energy (and money). When an HVAC system doesn’t seem to be keeping up with the temperature it’s set at, many homeowners tend to jump to the worst possible conclusion—that the unit is failing. But often the culprit is actually the thermostat, which is a much easier (and cheaper) fix. Checking to make sure your thermostat is up to snuff is simple process:

Start by checking the power source. If your thermostat is battery powered, for example, make sure that the batteries haven’t died.

Do you have a WiFi thermostat? There should be a setting that allows you to run a test. It’ll let you know if everything is running smoothly or if you need to get someone out to do a professional check.

If you have a standard thermostat, remove the cover and make sure the inner workings are free and clear of any dust.

If you’re still having issues, it’s usually easy to tell whether the thermostat or the HVAC unit is at fault. Grab a helper and have them stand near the HVAC unit while you’re near the thermostat. Turn the thermostat from off to heat and slowly increase the temperature. Both the unit and the thermostat should make a noise…whichever one doesn’t is the culprit.

The Benefits of Zone Control

We all love that we can change the temperature of our home at the touch of a button. But that leaves one glaring question: What if you don’t want to cool your entire home? What if you like to sleep at 65°, but your kids like to sleep at 72°? What if you want to cool your home office during the day but don’t want to pay to cool the living room while no one is using it? The answer to these questions is zone control. At Appel, we can install a state-of-the-art system that lets you customize the temperature of your home in each area of your house. Because when it comes to comfort, you shouldn’t have to compromise.

The Benefits of WiFi Thermostats

Technology just keeps advancing to make our lives easier and more comfortable, and thermostat technology is no different. If you don’t have a WiFi thermostat by now, we highly recommend you jump on the bandwagon! These devices let you control the temperature of your home using an app on your phone. People love that flexibility for many reasons—if you turned the temp down on your A/C while you were getting ready in the morning, but forgot to set it higher when you left for work, you can do so from miles away at your desk. Similarly, if you’ve decided to leave work early and want the house to be nice and cool when you get home, you can turn the temp down before you even leave the office.

And like with standard versions, you can put your WiFi thermostat on a schedule so you can set it and forget it. But unlike standard versions, a typical WiFi thermostat will let you set several different schedules—one for every day of the week, if necessary. Setting a schedule for your thermostat is a great way to save even more energy—in fact, it can reduce your energy bill by up to 30%.

Thermostats are truly the unsung heroes of your HVAC system. Making sure yours is working properly can save you lots of headaches in the long run. And if it’s time for a new one, we highly recommend switching to WiFi. If you’re having issues, are ready to make the switch, or just want to ask some questions, give us a call! We’re always happy to chat and help you find the right solution for your home comfort needs.

The post Thermostats: The Unsung HVAC Heroes appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4859</post-id>

7 Easy Ways to Spring Clean Your HVAC System

SGC Admin

Maintenance

DIY HVAC

HVAC contractors

HVAC maintenance

pro tips

spring cleaning

You blocked off a weekend, rolled up your sleeves, and now you’re ready to apply a little elbow grease and... Read the Rest »

The post 7 Easy Ways to Spring Clean Your HVAC System appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

You blocked off a weekend, rolled up your sleeves, and now you’re ready to apply a little elbow grease and get to the spring cleaning. The garage is on the list, as well as the attic, the basement, the bathroom…but don’t forget about your HVAC system! Making sure everything is clean and in working order can help keep you as comfy as possible during the upcoming summer heat. Here are seven simple ways to make sure your HVAC is up to snuff for the next season:

1. Do a Trial Run

You’ve been using your heater all winter long, but it’s probably been a while since you’ve used your air conditioner. While the weather is still mild, turn your A/C on for a few hours, and really pay attention. Do you hear any weird noises? Do you notice an unusual smell? Do you feel hot air coming out of the vents, instead of cold? These are all warning signs that it may be time to call a professional. And you’ll be glad you got it taken care of before the 90 degree days hit!

2. Clear the Debris

HVAC systems typically have outdoor components, like the air conditioner condenser. The condenser has a really important role, because that’s what releases the hot air from your home. If it’s obstructed in any way, it can’t do its job well and could end up leading to serious (and expensive) issues. It’s important to make sure your outdoor components are clear of leaves, twigs, and other detritus, especially after the mayhem of winter. (And while you’re at it, make sure your indoor components are clear, as well. You never want to crowd your unit.)

3. Change Your HVAC Filters

A good rule-of-thumb is to change your 1-2″ filters every 30-60 days and your 3-5″ filters every 9-12 months. But that’s a pretty big range—how do you know when it’s time to change YOUR filter? Do you have hairy pets? Do you have an older unit? Do you live in a particularly dusty part of town? All of these factors, and more, influence how often you should change your filter (we even wrote an article all about it). But it’s important to stay on top of it, because a dirty filter can trigger allergies and respiratory problems, and it might even raise your utility bill. Pull out your filter and give it a once-over—if it looks dusty or dirty, or if it’s starting to disintegrate, it’s definitely time to swap it out for a new one.

4. Check Your Thermostat

We can’t tell you how often we’ve been called to fix someone’s air conditioner or furnace, but it turned out to be a broken thermostat, instead. The good news is, it’s fairly easy to test to see which issue it is. If you have a smart thermostat, you should be able to run a system test. If you have a standard thermostat, have someone stand near the HVAC unit and someone else near the thermostat. Turn the thermostat from off to heat and slowly increase the temperature. Both the unit and the thermostat should make a noise…whichever one doesn’t is the culprit. If you have a standard thermostat, remove the cover and gently clean out any dust. And don’t forget to check the batteries! If none of the above helps, it’s time to give us a call.

5. Clean Your Ducts

You don’t need to clean your air ducts every spring (we wrote an article about this, too). But if it’s been a few years, it might be time to take a look. According to The EPA, your air ducts can develop mold, contain dead rodents, and gather a lot of dust. Then your HVAC system ends up piping all that nastiness straight into your home. If it’s been 3-5 years since you last cleaned your ducts, call a professional, and they’ll get you squared away.

6. Check the Electrical

The electrical components for your HVAC system are usually out of sight and out of mind, but they still need to be maintained. Are all the wires securely connected? Are they starting to fray? And how’s your compressor looking? Electrical issues can result in a less efficient system or complete system failure, and it could even create a dangerous situation. If you notice any of the above issues, or anything else a bit dodgy, have a certified technician come out and take a look (and definitely do NOT touch any faulty-looking wires, unless you’re an experienced electrician).

7. Do a Little Admin

You can start by reviewing your energy bills from the last two years. Are there any unexplained spikes in usage? That could point to an underlying issue. And now, think about your system’s maintenance. Are you on a regular schedule for your HVAC clean and checks? Is that schedule in your calendar? Pro Tip: if you enroll in one of our Platinum Maintenance Plans, we’ll reach out to you when it’s time for regular maintenance, so you don’t even have to think about it. You’ll also get priority scheduling and all sorts of discounts.

We hate that we had to add so much to your spring cleaning list, but this stuff is pretty important. So, you can either follow this checklist, or give us a call and we’ll do it for you.

Happy spring, from Appel!

The post 7 Easy Ways to Spring Clean Your HVAC System appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4833</post-id>

Is Duct Cleaning Really Necessary?

SGC Admin

Maintenance

duct cleaning

ductwork

HVAC contractors

HVAC tips

Your ducts are most likely out of sight and out of mind. So, is cleaning them actually necessary? Unless you’ve recently undergone construction or particularly dusty renovations, you’re probably fine to ignore your ducts for years at a time. But cleaning your ducts can have some benefits, so you may want to check them from time to time to make sure they’re performing as they should.

Pro Tip: As with most things, when it comes to duct cleaning, you get what you pay for. Those $59 coupons in the ValPak may seem enticing, but they’re actually a huge red flag. Often, those companies will use that low price to get themselves in your door and then upsell you on products or services you don’t actually need. If you’re considering duct cleaning for your home, give us a call—we can refer you to companies we trust to do right by you and your home. And always be sure to get before and after pics!

Cleaning your ducts extends the life of your system.

How long will your HVAC system last? Much of that depends on wear and tear. If you put your system under a lot of strain—by letting dust and gunk build up in your ducts, for instance—you’ll end up overworking the components and reducing their useful life. But if you properly maintain your system, those components won’t have to work as hard, and they’ll last much longer. Cleaning your ducts is a great way to optimize your HVAC system and give it the longest life possible.

Cleaning your ducts improves your air quality.

Cleaning your ducts improves your air quality on two different levels:

Debris and pollutants can settle in your air ducts, which then send those contaminants into the air you breathe. That can trigger all sorts of health issues, like allergies and asthma.

Not to get too gross, but tiny critters do occasionally get trapped and die in your ducts. And, much like the debris and pollutants mentioned above, your ducts send the associated toxins (and smells) into your home. Cleaning your ducts regularly can nip those problems in the bud.

Cleaning your ducts is good for odor control.

When you run your A/C unit, do you notice a smell? Is it a little musty? Stale? Just generally unpleasant? That odor might be coming from bacteria and mold. It also might be coming from animal droppings that one of your rodent friends left behind. Many of us try to get rid of the smell with air fresheners, but that doesn’t actually solve the problem—it just masks it. Cleaning the ducts helps get to the root of the issue.

Cleaning ducts can uncover other problems.

The good news is that your HVAC system is pretty sophisticated. But it also comes with a lot of moving parts. Is there a loose connection somewhere? Did something rust over? Is there a leak that led to standing water? You can’t always spot those problems until you really get in there. When you have your ducts professionally checked, the technician might spot hidden issues that they can only uncover during a deep clean.

The post Is Duct Cleaning Really Necessary? appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4642</post-id>

Preventive Maintenance Matters!

SGC Admin

Maintenance

Appel

appel heating & air conditioning

HVAC contractors

HVAC maintenance

HVAC tips

Indianapolis HVAC

preventive maintenance

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! It’s our mantra, and for good reason. Preventive maintenance truly is one of the most important things you can do to keep your HVAC system healthy and happy—thereby keeping you and your family healthy and happy. Here’s why:

Comfort: Preventive maintenance helps keep you comfortable all year ’round. If your system goes too long without a little attention, various issues can pop up that prevent your home from being heated or cooled evenly. You may also end up with irritating noises or smells that keep you from enjoying the comfort of your home to the fullest.

Money: “A stitch in time….” When you regularly have an HVAC technician check on things, they’re more likely to notice small problems before they become big problems. Even something as simple as a small leak or a dirty filter (change your filters!) can lead to a complete shutdown if left alone for too long. That small maintenance fee will be well worth it to avoid having to pay to replace the entire system.

More Money: Without proper maintenance, you could end up spending more on your utility bills. Your HVAC units can develop blockages and leaks that significantly impact your system’s energy efficiency. When your system has to work harder to get air around those blockages, it means more money out of your pocket.

Indoor Air Quality: Regular maintenance of your HVAC system helps your indoor air quality and the overall cleanliness of your home. Over time, mold, dirt, and dust builds up inside the equipment and can end up escaping into your living areas. Not only does this mean having to clean your home more often, it can also lead to allergies and serious respiratory issues.

Safety: Neglected heat pumps and heating units can lead to mechanical and electrical problems which, in turn, can result in a fire. If you have a gas furnace, your technician will also test your gas burners to make sure gas is not leaking into your home and raising carbon monoxide levels.

Has it been awhile since your HVAC system got some TLC? But there are several easy, routine things you can do without calling in the HVAC pros—and knowing how to do them can help keep your family comfortable throughout the season without spending an arm and a leg!

Change Your Filters

Furnace Filters – These should be checked monthly and swapped out every 30-60 days. Most systems make it easy to find and remove the filter, but if you have issues, a quick Google search on your unit’s make and model will give you specific instructions. Turn off your unit, and pull out the filter. Look for dust on the surface, a fuzzy appearance, dampness, or mold. If you see any of these conditions, it’s time for a change!

Whole-house Humidifier Filter – These should be changed at least once a year, and maybe more often if you have hard water or we’ve had a particularly harsh winter. Check your owner’s manual, but most units follow these fairly simple steps: turn off the system, remove the cover, and disconnect the water tube. Remove the filter (sometimes called an evaporator pad)—if it looks to be in good condition, just give it a good cleaning with water and vinegar to remove any calcification. If a replacement is needed, slide the new filter into the tracks (there should be markings to indicate which end goes where), taking care not to jam it in (this is an indication it’s not going in properly). Replace the cover, and turn your unit back on. In addition to changing or cleaning your filters, the whole unit should be cleaned annually.

Clean Off Your Outdoor A/C Unit

If you keep on top of it, this is really a minor chore. Any time you’re outside doing yard work, cooking on the grill, or playing with the kids, take a few minutes to check out your A/C unit. Remove any loose debris, like tree branches and leaves. Suck up any dirt on the fins using the soft-brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Hose off any lingering muck. These simple tasks will help keep your unit running cleaner, longer, and more efficiently—and will help make sure it starts up without any issues come summertime.

Re-seal Your Windows

It’s no good heating and cooling your house when all the air is escaping out of cracks around your windows. A couple times a year, be sure to inspect all the seals on the outside of your doors and windows. Remove any cracked, dry, or damaged caulk, clean the area, and replace with new. Put painter’s tape down first to keep things nice and neat, and smooth the caulk with a lint-free cloth after you’ve piped it in.

Change the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans

Most people don’t realize you can change the direction your ceiling fan rotates, much less why you’d ever want to do such a thing. But this simple task can end up saving you up to 10% on your heating and cooling bills! In the summer, you want your fan rotating counterclockwise, to force air downwards, creating that lovely, cooling breeze. In the winter, having your fan rotating clockwise will create an updraft that helps circulate warm air throughout the room. To change directions, turn your fan off, find a sturdy ladder, and take a look at the base of the fan. Find the switch, and slide it to the opposite direction. (It’s really that easy.)

The post Easy Household Maintenance You Can Do Yourself appeared first on Appel Heating & Air Conditioning.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">4477</post-id>

4 Reasons to Get a Maintenance Plan for Your HVAC System

SGC Admin

Maintenance

Appel

HVAC

HVAC contractors

HVAC maintenance

HVAC safety

HVAC tips

Indianapolis HVAC

Your car, your teeth, and your laptop all need regular maintenance. So, it comes as no surprise that your HVAC system does too. That’s why so many people sign up for HVAC maintenance contracts, like Appel’s Platinum Maintenance Plan. Here are four top reasons why maintenance contracts are quickly becoming the new HVAC standard:

1. Regular maintenance optimizes your heating and cooling system.

Do you have a dirty or faulty evaporator coil? That alone could mean your HVAC system is working 30% harder than it needs to be. But regular maintenance can optimize your HVAC unit, increase efficiency, and save you money on your energy bill.

2. Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs.

Little issues, as you know, can quickly snowball into big ones. When it comes to your HVAC system, it’s important to nip these things in the bud. Our Platinum Maintenance Plan includes two visits per year, which is enough to stay on top of everything and keep those tiny hiccups from spiraling.

3. You save money with exclusive discounts.

When you buy a maintenance plan, you’re essentially buying in bulk. That means you’ll get a discounted rate on each visit. With our Platinum Maintenance Plan, you’ll also get a 15% discount on each repair, $15 off diagnostic charges, and no overtime repair charges.

4. You receive VIP treatment and priority scheduling.

Maintenance plans can unlock a higher level of service and perks. For example, with our Platinum Maintenance Plan, you get personalized service when scheduling the visits—we call you. And if you have an issue that needs help immediately, you’ll be moved to the front of our list.

When you sign up for a maintenance contract, you’re making an investment. And like any good investment, you pay a little more up front to gain a lot down the line. These maintenance plans can optimize your HVAC system, prevent costly repairs, and grant you access to a VIP tier of service. We asked our technicians what they hear most out on the job, and here’s what they had to say:

How much does new HVAC equipment cost?

Equipment pricing can vary, depending on what brand and efficiency of equipment you want to look at. We can provide a wide range of pricing for the homeowner but the best way to get a definitive price is to have a salesman come to the house and discuss all of your options.

What brands does your company sell?

American Standard and Rheem are our primary brands. We’ve used both for over 30 years and are absolutely confident in recommending them for our customers’ homes.

Do you install water heaters?

Yes! We sell and install water heaters.

How long does it take to install a humidifier?

It usually takes between 3 to 3.5 hours in most circumstances.

What kind of filter should I use, and when should I change it?

Standard 1” filters are ok but do require monthly upkeep.
