Know how to use your fire extinguisher before you have to

When a fire starts, every second matters. A typical fire extinguisher has about 8 seconds of life, so it’s important to know how it works. Store your fire extinguisher near an exit, so you can use it as you back out the door. You should also store one in the kitchen, where most fires start. When you use the extinguisher, just remember the acronym PASS: (1) Pull the pin; (2) AIM the nozzle at the flames; (3) Squeeze the trigger; and (4) SWEEP the spray from side to side. Remember: the fire may not be out even if you do not see flames. Unless you are positive it has been extinguished call 911.
