Borrow, Don’t Buy: Support Your Local Library!

“Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.” —Neil Gaiman

In the internet age, you may be tempted to think libraries are a dying institution. Not so, and nor should they be. Libraries offer a safe place for the community to gather with free access to information and technology, knowledge and imagination. Libraries are a place for everyone.

And while some of our tax dollars go to support basic expenses and upkeep, to have a library system that is truly worthwhile, they need a little extra help. Here are a few ways you can give back to your local library:

  • Donate money – Instead of buying the latest best-seller, consider donating that amount and checking it out from the library, instead.
  • Donate materials – Do you have a stack of books by your bed that’s just gathering dust? Give them to the library! You may also want to contact your local branch to see if they need any other supplies. Many libraries offer all sorts of events and workshops, and donations of games, art supplies, and the like may also be welcome.
  • Donate time – Volunteering to help with events or everyday administrative activities can be a rewarding way to give back to the community and help keep the library running smoothly.
