Assembling a Winter Car Safety Kit

A good driver is always prepared…especially in the fall and winter seasons. The harsh weather can put a lot of strain on your car, and if it breaks down, you could be stranded in the cold. Stay safe with this list of must haves:

  • First aid kit. Many drugstores have fairly cheap, small kits, but if you want to assemble your own, it should include (at the very least) Band-Aids, antiseptic, gauze pads, and hand sanitizer.
  • Jumper cables. Cold weather is especially rough on car batteries. Having jumper cables on hand can not only save your own car, but could make you a hero, if you’re able to help a fellow motorist!
  • Spare tire and tools. A flat tire is one of the most common causes of a breakdown. Familiarize yourself with how to change a tire, and keep the tools handy, so you don’t have to rely on a tow truck to get you moving again.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries. While most of us have flashlights on our phones, having a real flashlight in your car can come in handy…especially if your phone battery dies as quickly as ours do!
  • Water and snacks. If your car breaks down in a remote area or in the middle of severe weather, help could be a long way off. Keeping non-perishable items in the car—like crackers and beef jerky—could save your life!
